Mattress vs. Box Spring Recycling in California

What California’s stewardship program generally accepts, and which bed parts sit outside it.

A good pickup plan answers the practical questions before anyone starts lifting. Use this guide to check the item, the route, and any local program rules that may apply.

What California’s program covers

CalRecycle describes the statewide program as covering used mattresses, box springs, and futons. The program is administered by the Mattress Recycling Council.

A foundation can qualify

Bye Bye Mattress defines a foundation or box spring as the fabric-covered platform supporting the mattress. Traditional box springs and many foundations fit this category.

A bed frame is different

Bare frames, headboards, and other bedroom furniture are not mattress-program units. They need to be listed and routed separately.

Condition still matters

Receiving facilities may reject wet, heavily soiled, severely damaged, or contaminated units. Ask before assuming a particular recycling path.

Quick check

  • Every item is listed separately.
  • The carrying route and parking are described.
  • Condition issues are disclosed before pickup.
  • Building or municipal rules are checked at the source.
