How to Prepare a Mattress for Pickup

A room-to-truck checklist for clear paths, dimensions, pets, parking, and mattress condition.

A good pickup plan answers the practical questions before anyone starts lifting. Use this guide to check the item, the route, and any local program rules that may apply.

Start with the item list

Write down the mattress size and every separate piece: foundation, box spring, frame, headboard, footboard, slats, and bedroom furniture. A “bed” can mean one item or a full room of parts.

Walk the carrying route

Measure the narrowest doorway and note tight corners, stairs, railings, low fixtures, gates, and the distance to parking. Apartment residents should confirm elevator and loading-area rules.

Check the condition

Mention moisture, heavy soil, tears, structural damage, or possible pests. Do not hide a condition that could change safe handling or recycling eligibility.

Set the room

Remove bedding and personal items. Keep pets and children out of the path. Do not disassemble a complex frame unless you know how it was assembled and can do so safely.

Quick check

  • Every item is listed separately.
  • The carrying route and parking are described.
  • Condition issues are disclosed before pickup.
  • Building or municipal rules are checked at the source.
