When Can an Old Mattress Be Recycled?

A plain-language look at condition limits, California options, and questions to ask before pickup.

A good pickup plan answers the practical questions before anyone starts lifting. Use this guide to check the item, the route, and any local program rules that may apply.

Eligible product types

California’s stewardship program generally accepts mattresses and fabric-covered foundations used by California consumers. A detachable futon mattress may qualify; the frame does not.

Reasons a unit may be rejected

Wet, heavily soiled, severely damaged, or biologically contaminated mattresses may be unsafe or impractical to process. Acceptance belongs to the receiving facility.

Materials a recycler may recover

A recycling facility may separate steel, foam, textiles, and wood when the unit and downstream markets allow it. Do not treat a recycling route as guaranteed until the receiving option is confirmed.

Questions to ask

Ask whether the exact item type and condition are accepted, whether an appointment is required, where the item must be placed, and whether other bed parts need a separate route.

Quick check

  • Every item is listed separately.
  • The carrying route and parking are described.
  • Condition issues are disclosed before pickup.
  • Building or municipal rules are checked at the source.
